Le style « bling-bling » était très courant au début du rap, jusqu'à la fin des années 1980 où il a pratiquement disparu pour laisser place à un style plus sobre dans les années 1990.

Il revient en force depuis le début du XXIe siècle avec des artistes comme Lil'Jon, Lil' Wayne, Rick Ross, l'arrivée du Crunk et précédemment la vague Dirty South, qui exacerbe les signes de richesse tels que l'argent, les bijoux, les voitures modifiées, et le style de vie « bling-bling ».

On retrouve parmi le « bling-bling » de massives chaînes en or et en diamant, des bagues, des Pimp cups, sorte de trophée, de coupe, – comme celles de Lil' John, estimée à plusieurs milliers de dollars –, et des grillz, recouvrant les dents.

En France, l'expression est utilisée par certains critiques de Nicolas Sarkozy, dans un sens proche de « nouveau riche....»
